There are often reports bestowing the virtues of incorporating HIIT-style workouts into your fitness regime. HIIT, or high intensity interval training, has been around for a little while now and its benefits continue to captivate the fitness world. A fast and furious mix of 45-second full on and intense blasts of activity coupled with 15-second recovery phases, HIIT-style workouts are ideal if you are short on time but yet want to enjoy an effective exercise routine.

You can do a HIIT-style workout anywhere, and you don’t necessarily need equipment either. You can use most of the machines in the gym, such as treadmills, rowing machines, bikes or cross-trainers. Or you can take part in a circuit training class, which is probably one of the best examples of HIIT in action.

Circuit training is amazing for your overall body, health, mind and wellbeing. As with all forms of exercise it can help to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels, it can improve feelings of depression, stress and anxiety, and it can also prevent against stroke, heart disease and certain cancers. Furthermore, if you are looking to improve your fitness levels, tone up and lose weight, then it is your perfect choice. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at why circuit training is so amazing:

  1. Weight loss. As circuit training offers a combination of both resistance work and cardiovascular exercise, it is proven to be excellent for assisting with weight loss. It is also a good choice if you have lost weight and want to maintain your new figure. You will burn a greater number of calories doing circuit training or another HIIT-style workout than you would if you did just a normal gym workout. In addition, your body will continue to burn calories for up to 48-hours after your workout, plus your metabolism will be increased too which means further weight loss benefits.
  2. Quick and easy. Life is busy and often finding the time for an hour’s gym workout is a challenge. However, you can easily squeeze a quick circuit training session into your busy day. Even just 20-minutes of circuit training five times a week is enough to help with weight loss, muscle tone and fitness. And because it’s such a high intensity form of exercise you will see comparable – if not better – results than slogging for an hour in the gym.
  3. Keep motivated. Circuit training is fast, furious and full of fun. You will flit around between different ‘stations’ which means you won’t have time to be bored! From weights to sprints, you’ll learn new fitness techniques which you can incorporate into your workouts.
  4. An amazing full body workout. Offering a really powerful mix of both cardiovascular exercise and resistance exercise, your heart and lungs will be working hard as circuit training is excellent for maintaining an elevated heart rate due to the high intensity aspects. Furthermore, you will also see impressive changes in your muscle tone and definition, fitness levels, stamina levels, posture and overall strength.
